Project Joel: Why I Choose to Build in Public.

Ever since I first discovered the web, I have found myself occasionally driven to carve out a quiet piece of digital real estate to call my own.

My journey of building on the internet isn't new; it has evolved in parallel with the web itself:

• 1995: Hand-coded my very first website on GeoCities using raw HTML.

• 2001: Hosted a Chinese web novel site from a physical server box tucked away in my college dorm room.

• 2007: Launched a Chinese culinary blog that grew large enough to trigger an actual Adsense check payment from Google (which lives on today as bites.joel.hk).

Every few years, the landscape changes, the platforms shift, and digital noise amplifies. Yet, my need for a structured, centralized workspace remains.

While platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WeChat, and LinkedIn are excellent for immediate updates, some thoughts demand structural logic, permanence, and depth. They require a notebook.

The 7 Core Drivers

This space exists to solve specific psychological and operational friction points. I write here to achieve seven distinct goals:

4. An Operational Self-Reminder: Putting a framework in public serves as an unyielding personal directive to take immediate action in my daily operations.

5. Constructive Self-Pressure: Publishing my targets and systems applies a healthy layer of accountability to make measurable progress.

6. An Open-Source Identity: For partners, connections, and peers to truly learn about my underlying architecture, methodology, and philosophy.

7. To Channel Cognitive Energy: A disciplined sandbox to process and channel my operational reflections and experiences into structured insights.

The Execution Framework

I view life not as a single, static timeline, but as an ongoing collection of deliberate, execution-focused projects. This notebook will track them across three distinct domains:
